As it looks, like the NYPL's Oneonta Tigers are moving to Norwich, CT, (vacated by the Connecticut Defenders) the city is looking into an NYCBL franchise. www.thedailystar.com/local/local_story_034040024.htmlOneonta was last in the NYPL in attendance last year, with a little under a thousand per game. However, the 400-600 that an NYCBL team would hopefully draw would be solid for the league.

For those of you that are more familiar with upstate NY, is this a good move? Will Oneonta support a NYCBL team?

Oneonta has had baseball in the city for a long, long time. I think any quality league would do pretty well there. The problem with last years team in Oneonta was the lack of promotion. Also the lack of creativity they had when trying to promote games. From what I've heard, the people running last seasons franchise didn't really put much effort into it. Hopefully, if the NYCBL lands there, and it's promoted right, people will show up for the games. It would be a tremendous rival for the Cooperstown team as well.

Should be a good fit though having two collegiate league teams only about 20 minutes apart could make for some tough situations if both teams are home on the same night. That said, with Cooperstown having to play home games at 5, one could hit both parks in the same night and only miss a little action.
Oneonta's done a great job supporting baseball and fewer home dates with much lower ticket prices than the O-Tigers should bring in the folks.
Reading some of the articles in the Oneonta paper however are slightly disheartening as they talk of locals getting involved with the team as coaches - no one realizes that model doesn't work at this level, ask Bennington circa 2007. Should the sale go through, the new group is going to have a hell of a time getting a roster and coaching staff in place by June but the local support should be there.

As far as players, if I were them I would try to lure players currently signed with nearby ECBL or ACBL teams who might jump at the chance to play in a higher caliber league like the NYCBL. It will definitely be a issue, however, as Oneonta, while a great city, just doesn't have the allure of Cooperstown for players.

Whoa NECBLfan! Our leagues(ECBL, ACBL) work very hard at trying to sign quality players. Taking players away in February would crush our organizations. We are on the right track(ECBL) as far as our league really improving after the last few years and to start taking quality players away from our teams would be wrong. I'm sure that if the Cape were looking for players who are signed to play in the NECBL those organizations wouldn't be very happy. if you can't find enough players that fit the quality of the players in the league, don't field a team! Anyway, our players are signed to play with us and cannot play anywhere else.

My apologies, sheenestevez. I meant no offense to your league and I'm clearly not well versed in the rules regarding player transfer. I have just observed several players switching teams or even league midseason, but it appears I was wrong.

From what I understand, it wouldn't be an expansion team, instead, one of the current league teams would be sold to the Oneonta group. No news since the start of the new week though we may just be in a bit of a lull before the franchise is announced.
No need for a new group to raid the talent of other leagues - players leave one team and go to the next all the time. Which is why rosters this time of the year are tentative or preliminary. Players get hurt, have a change of heart, play so well they are placed in another league or play well below expectations and the team decides they don't want them anymore (among other things). The franchise should hope that they can bring in the coach of the team being sold and the roster that he put together.
