I know I posted this somewhere else, but expanding the playoffs to be so inclusive seems kinda lame to me. What's the point of the regular season if (almost) everyone makes the playoffs?

Two reasons:
1) Keeps interest of players longer, esp. on teams that otherwise be out of the running for anything
2) Improved likelihood that the teams won't lose money on the season (making the playoffs almost always makes the difference for these non-profit, all-volunteer organizations)

With the added advantage of being what I've been actually told! ;-)
